- Use job titles that describe the work: Choose a title that shows what you really did, not your payroll level.
- Show seniority with numbers: Budget size, team size and the level of people you worked with say more than a grade.
- Spell out agency names: Do not assume anyone outside the UN knows OCHA, UNFPA or DPPA.
To a recruiter outside the UN, 'P-4' looks like a typo. Here's how to translate UN professional and General Service grades into job titles that employers actually know.
The Problem With Internal UN Grades
UN staff speak in grade shorthand: P-2, P-4, D-1, G-5, NO-C. (Some of us could recite them in our sleep.) Outside the UN, these codes mean nothing to recruiters. Worse, a recruiter may see 'P-2', assume entry level, and miss your 7 years of field experience, or misread a 'G-7' operational role. So your job is to turn payroll codes into titles that people recognize.
Translate Your Grade Into a Market Title
Use a functional title that matches the real scope of your work. Here's a rough guide:
- P-1 / P-2: Specialist or associate manager level (for example, 'Program Specialist', 'Data Analyst').
- P-3 / P-4: Manager or senior specialist level (for example, 'Senior Project Manager', 'Operations Lead').
- P-5 / D-1: Director or executive level (for example, 'Regional Director', 'Head of Strategy and Operations').
- G-5 / G-7: Coordinator or operations specialist level (for example, 'Office Operations Coordinator', 'Senior Administrative Analyst').
Show Your Seniority With Numbers
A title only tells half the story, so add a short scope line under each one. Numbers are what make your seniority visible:
- Team size: 'Directly supervised 12 staff members and managed 40+ field contractors.'
- Money you controlled: 'Oversaw an annual operational budget of $6.5M across 3 regional offices.'
- Level of the people you worked with: 'Reported directly to the Country Representative; presented quarterly briefings to Ministry officials.'
Look at your last three UN job titles on your draft CV. Replace the grade codes with clear job titles and one scope line each.
