- Use AI to help you draft, not to write it for you: Edit the result so your own voice and your real facts stay in it.
- Never paste confidential UN information: Protect non-public reports, beneficiary details and internal emails under UN Staff Regulation 1.2(i).
- Check every claim: Look at dates, numbers and descriptions that AI gives you. It can be confident and wrong at the same time.
AI can save you hours in a job search, as long as you stay in charge. Here's how to use tools like ChatGPT and Claude to tailor your CV and practice interviews, while keeping UN confidentiality rules.
Where AI Helps Most
AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini) can do a lot of the slow work for you, if you use them with wisely:
- Find the key skills: Paste a job description and ask: 'List the top 5 skills this job needs.'
- Translate UN language: Paste one duty sentence (nothing confidential) and ask: 'Rewrite this sentence for a nonprofit resume without UN acronyms.'
- Practice interviews: Ask the tool to act as a hiring manager for your target job and to ask you practice questions.
Never let AI have the final word on what you share. At best the content will be generic, at worst, inaccurate. Review anything that’s AI-generated, before you send out.
Protect UN Confidentiality and Your Privacy
Be very careful about what workplace details you type into outside AI tools:
UN Staff Regulation 1.2(i) requirement: Never paste confidential UN documents, unreleased strategy papers, internal emails, financial audits or sensitive beneficiary names into a commercial AI tool. Some AI tools keep what you type and may use it to train their models.
Always check the privacy settings of a tool before you enter personal career details.
Keep Your Own Voice
AI-written cover letters often sound generic, too formal and repetitive. (Hiring managers have read the same polite letter many times by now.) Use AI to get an outline or new ways to say something, then write the final version yourself, in your own voice.
Use an AI tool today to study one job description and find three skills you still need to show on your resume.
